I teach kindergarten for Chicago Public Schools and I work in a low income community. This year I am teaching 22 of the best students in the world. However, living in a low income neighborhood, my students are unable to "play" like other kids their age because our school does not have the resources to enhance their play time. A house keeping center would allow my students to learn through creative play like other students in more prominent communities. I want to help put my student's imaginations to work by introducing them to a house-keeping center. A house-keeping center usually includes a toy refrigerator, stove and an oven with pots and pans. If my students had these items, their imaginations would be at work daily as they mimic their parents and participate in creative play. It is during creative play that young children interact with each other and share language and social skills. I want my students to have a house-keeping center because it would give them an opportunity to bring their home experiences into the classroom and share them with their peers. As a result, they will develop language, social and communication skills through fun, authentic, social interaction.
