My students are growing up in a tech savvy generation, where everything seems to have a touch screen, or many have never touched a screen. They attend a Title I school, where over half of our students are on a reduced or free lunch. They are young, impressionable and are eager to learn, and I would like to provide them the tools they need to be successful.
I want to put away the touch screens and introduce board games, to help my students not only develop academic skills but social skills.
My students always ask me, "When do we get to play." Our days are filled academics, but allowing them to play and have board games, will allow them that opportunity to "play," but develop thinking skills and social skills that will help them be successful.
My Project
I want to bring board games to my classroom to show my students how much fun they can be and how many skills they can develop both socially and academically.
Board games seem to be a thing of the past, with technology, but there are so many skills we can learn.
Students will be able to develop social skills, by learning how to win and lose, playing together with peers, taking turns, sharing. Students will also develop critical thinking skills by building, exploring, and understanding strategies to win.
Most importantly, I want my students to have fun. When playing board games, so many skills are developing and they are not aware! I want them to realize that there is more out there than just computers. Yes, they are an incredible tool and I use it in my classroom, but I want to give them that opportunity to step away and physically put these opportunities in there hands and so they see the endless possibilities of what they can do.
