With our new science standards firmly planted in place, I would like to incorporate more opportunities for students to grow. Specifically, our science standards address what matter and energy plants need in order to grow. We discuss air plants, water plants, and plants that thrive in soil - which is where this project stems from!
With the materials in this project, students will learn about the relationships between matter, energy, and plant growth.
The soil, seeds, and grow kits will allow students to meet their goal of seeing exactly what these types of plants need to grow. With the kits in their everyday environment, students will be able to manipulate materials in order to fully understand what enables strong plant growth.
One outcome for this project is to allow students to take part in the growth cycle of a plant from start to finish, while incorporating math skills into their science project. They will each follow the plant cycle as they focus on gathering measurement data of leaf and root growth to graph and analyze.
I believe that this project will not only help students to experience plant growth first hand, but to also experience developing skills in responsibility, accountability, and teamwork as they work to help their plants grow! Let's get planting!
