Our school is home to almost 1,000 students and 13 different languages are spoken in our school community. Thus, students learn so much from each other along with a strong academic curriculum. Our large rural school feels "smaller" because we are like family. We host numerous after-school clubs such as drama, art, running, and robotics. In addition, family nights and weekend activities nurture relationships among students, parents, and school faculty.
My 4th grade students are as unique and varied as the cereal isle at the supermarket, and their uniqueness makes our classroom a great place to learn!
Several students in my class love playing basketball, others make slime in their free time, while several others love to write stories and play soccer after school.
My Project
This class set of hard-back historical fiction novels will bring history alive for my fourth graders. As we study the American Revolution, students will be immersed in the events leading up to America's War for Independence. Students will experience hands-on activities to augment the novel including "Reader's Theater" (students perform skits to highlight important scenes in the novel), a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party in our school courtyard area, and Johnny Tremain day as a culminating activity. Not only will history be more memorable and exciting, but the novel study will strengthen my students' reading skills. The author uses a variety of literary devices that students will study as they read the novel including metaphor, simile, idiom, and imagery.
