I teach kindergarten students with autism and communication handicaps. They have grand imaginations and love the freedom of art. They are super visual and can often communicate through visual arts in the absence of spoken language.
We have no painting supplies and our easel is pre-WWII! It is really gritty too. We don't have paint cups and use paper cups that always fall over. We are so short of paint that we can't give the kids the colors they want.
We need a new easel that allows 4 children to paint at once as well as: 4 aprons, paint pots and brushes, glitter painters, brushes and tempera paints. We would love painting center supplies and glitter glue (our personal favorite thing). We do art nearly every day, from African masks to Chinese New Year dragons.
Art is especially motivating for our students because there are "no mistakes". The art work our students produce is always a source of pride. It is also a bridge to communication as it stimulates conversation and simple requests. It is incredibly motivating because it is fun.
