Help me give my students flexible seating options to help with very hyper active students who need to constantly move, also I know they would love the sand as it is stress relieving.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege to teach students with mild to severe disabilities. This group of students are so very hard working, lovable, and energetic. They benefit from tactile learning and small group setting. Being in the General Education classroom they are restricted to staying in their assigned seats which is very difficult for most of them who thrive from physical activity and need the movement to exert energy. When students are working with me in small group I allow them the freedom to take short breaks around the room but they so maximize their learning if the amount of time leaving their seat were lessened when seat work is needed.
My Project
I would love the use of balance balls, bean bags, and sensory dough. I have seen the benefit of these flexible seating options in students academic growth. Students are able to focus because the body isn't resisting it's desire to squirm and fidget. By the students being able to move on purpose they will not be redirected or forced to stay still. Some of our students get into trouble because they can not properly process their emotions for various reasons. Having the sand could potentially allow the students to calm down and think their way out of a stressful, negative, or heighten state of emotion. The majority of students who live with attention/focus problems have a harder time processing and understanding what is being taught therefore they can not recall information needed to apply what they have or should have learned. Thank you!!
