I teach in a self-contained 2nd and 3rd grade special education classroom. My students are creative, curious, and enthusiastic. They come to school with smiles on their faces and work extremely hard each day to improve their skills. The students in my class have a range of disabilities, from autism and learning disabilities to speech/language impairments and ADHD.
Many of my students are kinesthetic learners, which means they learn better if they can move their bodies.
Several of the students in my class have attention difficulties. They are very active and have difficulty staying focused for more than a few minutes at a time. My goal is to create a classroom environment that is conducive to my students’ diverse learning styles to help them achieve academic success.
My Project
Over the past few years, I have tried to create a movement-based classroom. One way of doing this is by providing alternative seating options. Students are allowed to sit on exercise balls and swivel stools or they may work at a standing desk.
Creating an active classroom that allows for movement enhances student engagement in the learning process.
Therefore, I would like to add a kneeling chair and additional swivel stools to our active seating collection. Mini exercise bikes and foot rockers will help students relieve extra energy. The new exercise balls will replace some of the existing ones that have become worn out from prolonged use.
