This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Recess! The mere word brings a smile to anyone's face, even an adult. My students live in the crowded inner city, without much room to run, jump, or climb trees. Help me make recess a time they can be active and have fun!
My students are absolute firecrackers, full of energy and that special joie de vivre that only kids have.
They love to run, yell, and get their ya-yas out after a long morning of hard work. Many of them (especially my boys) dream of becoming professional athletes, and they love playing basketball and football.
Our school is in North Philadelphia, a crowded urban center surrounded by tightly-packed row homes. All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and over 95% of them are African-American.
My Project
This past week (our first week of school), I took my students out to recess and watched them stare across the blacktop, rather bored.
"Miss, do you have any basketballs we can use? Do you have jump ropes?" they asked.
After already spending about $300 on my classroom so far this year, it broke my heart to not be able to go buy recess equipment for them. With balls and rope, I know they'll be able to run, jump, and have fun during recess, making school a happier place to be.
This kind of equipment is especially important in my school, where nutrition and healthy living isn't always within reach for my students.
Forming a positive relationship with exercise is crucial for middle schoolers, so they grow into active adults. Please help them form healthy habits now!
