A typical day in my classroom is full of activity and energy. My students come through the door ready to share with everyone all the things that happened the night before. They are non-stop motion all day long. Following routines and trying their best for me is what they love to do.
I teach a substantially separate class of developmentally delayed and Autistic students.
They are a very enthusiastic group of special learners. They love to learn new skills and would love to be able to read and write independently. Some of my students have motor difficulties, so typical paper and pencil activities can be frustrating for them. They also have visual perceptual issues that make looking down at a paper difficult. Writing on an angled surface and using dry erase markers are both beneficial and motivating to all of my students. We are located in a large urban elementary school (830 students), and my classroom is actually a smaller resource room that has very limited writing surfaces. We do a lot of chart paper writing that can be moved around and make use of 2 smaller older easels that have to be carried from spot to spot in the classroom.
My Project
My students love to use white boards and dry erase markers. They also love to write in different positions (standing, sitting, lying down). The large easel will provide another writing surface for them that is stable and easy for them to access. The lines on one side of the board will also provide them with guide lines to help them with sizing and spacing.
Many of my students have fine motor issues.
Writing on a flat surface, such as a table, is not always the best option for them. By having a larger easel that we can move about the room, my students will have the opportunity to practice their writing and math skills on a vertical surface. This will help them improve their muscle strength and control in their hands and arms.
