Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The five and six year old students attend an urban school with over eighteen hundred students. The kindergarten students are eager to learn, curious, and creative. They are hard workers and love to play. They are from different backgrounds and speak a variety of languages at home and in the community. Some live in single parent households while others live with multiple extended family members. These students need more imaginative play time to balance out the rigor expected from the district. School is full of important academics; however, playing while learning keeps everyone motivated. Their pure love for learning mixed in with the diverse cultural environment makes me love being a teacher.
Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through eight and provides challenging academics, excellent teachers and a safe learning environment.
As a result, we are usually a high academic performing school within our district. Our goal is to prepare our students for further success in high school, college and ready for a career.
My Project
Students love to play and move. One of their favorite times at school is recess time with their friends. Recess is a critical element in our day and improves students social skills and gross motor skills. It is important for all students to have the opportunity to learn not only in the classroom but out on the play yard as well.
These trikes and scooters are used not only by over 100 kindergarten students but they are also shared with the preschool and T-K students on our campus.
We have used the same bikes originally purchased when we opened in 2000. Some of the bikes and scooter have been stolen and the rest are on their last leg. Our wonderful custodian staff has repaired, as best they could, the parts and pieces of the trikes and scooters over the years. Unfortunately, they are at the point of no return.
The trike and scooter will provide valuable opportunity to share and take turns along with being creative in their play. Some of our students do not have these opportunities at home and will learn to pedal and steer a trike and scooter on a daily basis. The trike and scooter will give them an opportunity to play in a creative and fun way out on the playground, a chance to exercise and help develop gross motor skills that often get overlooked during the school day. Mostly, a donation to this project will help support play during the school day which is a vital and wonderful part of any educational experience.
