Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a neighborhood that's predominately Hispanic and 85% of the students who attend the school are from low-income families. While parents try their best to be involved in their student's learning, it can be hard and most of the time students do not get the help they need at home. This is where I step in and try my best to provide everything I can in my classroom for my students.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the one thing in common they each have is the love for learning.
It has been fascinating to see how much students get comfortable with their Spanish and to hear non-native speaking students engaged in a Spanish conversation. It is truly beautiful to hear!
My Project
Students should be able to feel safe when they enter their classroom and that has always been one of my main goals as an educator. Flexible seating can give my students the opportunity to have a choice that will help them not only be comfortable while learning, but to also create a safe environment .
Being in a cramped room and sitting on chairs all day can be boring and can turn off learning for some students, but flexible seating can eliminate this!
Brain breaks help student loosen up and allow them to let out some energy, but the materials from this project can give more brain breaks throughout the school day. Eliminating chairs and tables can help the classroom feel less cramped. Replacing them with a Saucer Chair and wobble cushions can allow students to move around while still learning. Having a storage Ottoman bench can also provide students with more space to spread around the room and have a choice to where they want to learn. Not only will flexible seating help my students move while they learn, but it will also help create a safe environment for them to enter every day.
