Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are always excited when they enter the classroom, especially on lab days. They enjoy hands-on activities, working in small groups and being able to explore with their peers. My goal is to provide my students with an engaging, fun and safe learning environment. My school is located in a low social economic neighborhood where 95% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students are faced with many challenges in the classroom and at home.
My Project
This will be a new year, new subject, and new grade levels for me. I have taught fifth grade science the last five years and I am excited to start this new journey into art with all of our kiddos at school. The new room I am moving to hasn't been used as an actual classroom in a while and we haven't had a full time art time in years.
Help me get my students excited to learn about various artists like Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, Picasso and so many others through children's books.
The Katie Book Series by James Wayhew will take my students on fun adventures. In Katie and the Waterlily, the main character competes in an art competition and learns about five magical paintings by Monet. The other books in the series also explore different artists and their works of art.
The Artist Series by Laurence Anholt explores different artists as well and gives a kid friendly story to go along with each of them. We will be able to explore The Magic Garden with Monet, The Girl with a Pony Tail with Picasso, The King of Color with Matisse, and The Apple Boy with Cezanne. I believe these books will be a great addition and start to my art classroom library. Plus they will help my younger students make the connection to the past.
