This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
About My Students
I love this project because it will be empowering students through art. My students Serenatee and Shayla have spare headed this project from the start. They really wanted to do this project and were eager to create the proposal for the project.
My students listed mask making as one of their want to do items in art this year. However, they all had a very different idea of what type of cultural mask they wanted to create. They decided that they should do several different types of mask and then share the history of that mask in essay form to display in the school.
This project takes many skills to complete. For this project students will have to use their problem solving skills to create these masks. Students will also have to work as a team, students will be sharing some supplies. Some parts of the project will require an extra hand meaning that they will have to ask their neighbor for help.
In Their Own Words
Serenatee is hoping that, "this project will help students gain an better understanding of different cultures. By expanding our knowledge of different cultures, we can start having a better tolerance for those that are different from us."
Serenatee wrote, "I will make this project happen by making sure we have the supplies needed. I will also make sure that the other students understand why we are creating this mask, so that other students can learn about different cultures from around the world."
Shayla wrote, "This project is important to the school because it will help us understand how and why different cultures use masks. Not many of the students that go to my school know about other cultures or their customs. I believe that this project will help create tolerance for other cultures."
