Help me give my students exciting writing tools like silly monster pens and unusual bendy pencils to make their least favorite part of the day something to look forward to.
My third grade class is part of an exceptional group of students who have experienced significant life changes in the past year. With many new protocols in place, we've adjusted to new ways of accessing materials and resources as we periodically pivot between remote learning and our traditional classroom setting.
These third graders continue to show incredible resilience and have truly grown to appreciate learning in a way they never expected to.
My Project
It's not uncommon to hear a class-wide groan when we get to the WRITING portion of our schedule, or see exasperated eye rolls when the teacher says, "get ready to write!" The truth is, writing is hard for most kids! And in third grade, demands are slowly increasing as they progress from single sentences towards full paragraphs and even mini-essays.
It is my hope that by providing fun, new writing tools, we can shift their mindsets and helps these kids get excited about writing!
I've found furry pens, crayon rocks, animal pencils, pens with invisible ink and more for this project. My goal is to introduce a new writing tool each week or so and ask my students to complete 20 minutes of uninterrupted writing with it each day. By using a fun new tool every week, these third graders will be excited for writing by the end of the year!
