My Students

I am a special education teacher. My student's learning has been affected in several ways. When our school closed for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year, all we could do was make up packets for our special ed students and hope that their parents would have time to work with them. Most of my students had a difficult time focusing and learning through Zoom meetings so unfortunately they lost ground in math and reading. Students continue to struggle even with schools open because they miss school when they or a family member has COVID or has been exposed to it.

Many of my students suffer from anxiety, behavior issues and other emotional problems.

As you can imagine the Pandemic has caused those things to be amplified.

My Project

Place value and fractions are some of the hardest concepts for my special education students. Hands on materials will give them something concrete they can hold in their hands to help them learn. Additionally I would like to supplement their math with some children's books about math. For example if we are learning about fractions we can read a picture book about fractions and use the manipulative's to reinforce the concept.

My students also need help managing their strong emotions.

I am trying to help them regulate their feelings so they spend more time learning and less time angry, anxious or frustrated. Picture books about emotions help us talk about the issue and try to find solutions to help the child.
