Help me give my students the opportunity to explore and construct life long appreciation for music through the introduction of rhythm instruments in the classroom.
My students are part of one of the most diverse school districts in our state. Our district's students represent thirty-eight languages and sixty-four countries, with over half eligible for free or reduced lunches. I teach in a full-day multi-age early childhood classroom. My students range in age from three to five-years-old.
My goal is to create connections with my students and provide a loving, supportive environment for life long learning experiences.
We are a family spending between seven to ten hours a day together in our classroom. Although from a variety of backgrounds, my students care and support each other. We work together to make each day fun and full of opportunities to learn from each other. Our motto is: Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Helpful!
My Project
Music plays an important part in the development of young children and should not be limited to just singing and listening to music. It is important to introduce and incorporate instruments as part of daily lessons and routines.
Adding musical instruments to the curriculum offers children the opportunity to discover a totally different dimension of sound.
In her article, "Using Musical Instruments with Preschool Children to Tap into Learning", author Sarah Malburg lists the many benefits of exposing young children to instruments. Including the following:
* Develop a sense of beat and rhythm
* Increase listening skills
* Reinforce self-discipline and self-control
* Develop patterning, sequencing, and numerical order skills
* Develop understanding of where sound comes from and how it changes (according to instrument played)
* Social skills of sharing and taking turns
* Develop a sense of cultural awareness
At this time, rhythm sticks are the only instruments available for me to use for music. This purchase will allow me to offer a variety of musical instruments for my students to experiment and explore sound and work on the skills listed above. With the number of items ordered, I will be able to use the instruments in both small and large group settings. I will also have a music center available where children can experiment with instruments on an individual basis.
