I am a Special Education Teacher at a Title 1 Elementary school in Hilo, Hawaii. I teach 4th grade in an inclusion setting with a co-teacher. In our grade level, our students rotate for math, ELA, and sciences, therefore we will see each and every 4th grade student in our school (nearly 175 students!)
It is important to us that each and every student comes to school excited to learn every day.
As an inclusive classroom, we understand that the world can be a challenging place. We want our classroom to feel like a safe place where students can learn and explore together.
My Project
Hilo is a very rainy town! On average we can have 270 rainy days a year. That is a lot of missed recesses for our students. We want to have alternative activities that are fun for our students to partake in when they can not run outdoors. What is more fun than playing classic board games?
Children learn as they play.
Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn. We truly believe that all children need time to socialize and freely play. This is an important aspect of fostering a well balanced child. By giving them board games the students can socialize in a structured environment.
