As a teacher in a low-income and high-poverty school, our students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, our students deserve exceptional learning opportunities and an extraordinary learning environment.
My students are creative, collaborative, and full of spirit.
They like to move. They love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of our classrooms, we focus on their potential and growth while they are with us.
My Project
I want my 5th grade students to be able to experience the joy I remember from learning basic music theory in elementary school. However, right now our school does not have a music program. What is a teacher to do but start her own!
The rhythm sticks will help my students learn concepts of rhythm and the the recorders will help us to learn how to connect rhythm, pitch, and notation.
Recorders and rhythm sticks are ideal instruments for every level of learner. Both beginners and students with existing musical ability will equally benefit from working together with these simple instruments.
