My students need math write and wipe boards, ten frame boards, and magnetic math manipulatives to help make our math class an engaging and moving atmosphere.
My second graders are always on the move. We work in all areas of our room utilizing as much space as possible. My class is very energetic and enjoys learning in creative and new ways.
I work in a low socio-economic district, but you wouldn't know it if you met my students.
Their energy and enthusiasm more than make up for what we wish we had. We work hard, but we have as much fun as possible by learning in engaging ways.
My Project
I am really excited about being able to utilize the write on wipe off boards to help my students move throughout the classroom and show their understanding on fact families and number sense. The ten frame boards will allow my students to manipulate groups of tens and demonstrate their understanding. The magnetic math manipulatives will allow me to walk around the classroom, continuing to talk through a lesson on the Promethean board, but demonstrating a problem with the manipulatives right next to a student with a visual and tactile prop for better understanding.
Math can be such a challenge for so many students, and by having resources that allow learners to use visual and tactile practices, they may gain a stronger foundation and better understanding.
These resources will allow the students to work independently, in small groups, whole groups, play games, and best of all allow both the teacher and student to MOVE in the classroom. Second graders struggle to sit still in one location all day. Ideally, these resources will allow the students to practice the skill involving movement. These resources will also be beneficial to struggling learners with special needs who need more repetition to be successful.
