Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students are amazing! Even though they face many challenges due to their low socioeconomic status, every day they maintain the desire to learn. They are active and growing young learners with lots of hopes and dreams. By giving them the proper support and caring learning environment, all students are learning and growing, regardless of their individual situations.
My students are hard workers and they are eager to continue learning, but are in need of meaningful hands-on math manipulatives and activities to keep them engaged and motivated during distance learning.
As I continue to inspire my kiddos, I am finding new and innovative ways to help my students be successful. As we look to resume school in August, my focus is to offer rigorous and meaningful instruction.
My Project
Math is a foundational skill that can lead students to many different pathways in life. Now that students are currently learning from home due to the coronavirus pandemic, they are working hard using Google Classroom, YouTube, iReady Math, and many other websites. A challenge is that families are not equipped with the hands-on materials students needed to solidify math concepts.
My students need engaging math manipulatives, like polyhedral dice and graphing mats, plus digital math resources from Teachers Pay Teachers to stay motivated and learning from home!
This project will provide me with magnetic coordinate grid and base-ten blocks to model explicitly. It will also provide students with math resources to create math kits that will contain the polyhedral dice, dry erase graphing mats, and dice activities that I will print so they can be used at home during distance learning. With the creation of these math kits, students will be able to follow along from home and in turn continue a successful, educational journey.
