I am a New York City Public School Kindergarten teacher. The students in my class come from low income families and most of them speak English as a second language. Through "play" or "free center time", these children increase their communication skills and develop more socially around their peers. Since there is such a high emphasis on meeting the NYS Reading and Writing Standards, any money given to my class is used to purchase instructional material and not for toys. Play is so important at this young age. I am asking for toys for my students so that they can have fun playing after a long day of Reading and Writing. Thank you for your time.
