Help me give my students big Post Its, storage, and basic supplies to succeed in group projects. Their ability to work together successfully is helped tremendously by the resources listed here.
My students are a rainbow of cultural and socioeconomic diversity in a rich urban environment. They are both artistically and academically motivated in their learning as they attend an arts/performing arts high school in which they have specific majors of study in the arts. They are also college-oriented and so choose rigorous preparatory coursework such as College Board-level Advanced Placement classes. They also enjoy expressing their knowledge and their art through classroom discussions and debates, group work, and hands-on experiments and projects.
My Project
Students in my class are asked to collaborate, get their thinking clear, and work with others in tandem as they explore. The buckets, post its, markers, posters, laminated sheets are all designed as objects they'll use to make their thinking explicit.
Students that collaborate together learn together.
From eye-popping worksheets to scissors that are used in projects, each one of the items requested has a direct impact on student learning and collaboration. The calendar will help students know when they collaborate and in what room/what time. I also asked for scissors, post its, laminate, printer ink, posters, tape, tape dispensers, and buckets to hold it all in so that this can be an ongoing, enjoyable spot for students to learn over and over again. (If we laminate colored worksheets, they can be used repeatedly with many groups of students. That's why I want colored paper to print off of so that I can tell students that colored worksheets are worksheets we save for everybody). The folders will keep the students labs from that unit and their worksheets.... Let's help these enthusiastic students learn the value of collaborative and active learning.
