Help me give my students electronic tablets to do all the things that will make them successful in this 21st century learning environment and more. Some of my students have a difficult time with communication.

My Students

I teach 14-21-year-old students with autism. Some of these students have various intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. My classroom is considered self-contained low incidence high school. My students are from various school districts with hopes of great learning opportunities in a smaller setting. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them with their personal goals and visions for their futures.

My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.

All of my students participate in community based opportunities at various locations that includes job-like activities. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.

Most of my students will be living with their guardians after leaving my classroom until such time they move into group home settings. Some will be working, and being involved in their community when they finish school.

My Project

Imagine having words flowing in your head and no possible way to get them out! These tablets, with the right communication programming, will allow my students to communicate their wants and needs. These devices will go with non-verbal students during the day to allow them the ability to communicate with others. The interaction between peers and adults will open the students to a world of opportunities to explore. These students have been locked in a world where their voices haven't been heard. This is a perfect opportunity to help them soar to new heights.
