This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the poorest zip code in the city. They battle neighborhood crime, home situations that are less than ideal, and stereotypes about them based on skin color. However, my students/players are the most hardworking and deserving kids. Despite all of their hardships, they come with a willingness to learn, to be team players, and to perform to the best of their ability. Academically, these student-athletes are at the top of their class. A lot of outside people don't have high hopes for my students. Yet the staff at our school set high expectations and my students rise to those expectations. I expect excellence from them and they deliver!
My Project
CHS girls basketball team in Detroit is in desperate need of more athletic equipment. The school is in one of the most cash-strapped districts in the country. We do okay with the little that we have, imagine what we could do if we had more state-of-the-art equipment to work with? The girls' basketball team has had a winning record the last 3 years. We have excelled in spite of utilizing sub-par training equipment. We are in need of upgraded basketball equipment like a basketball rack, game day bag, basketballs, and D-Man defensive mannequins that would both the boys and girls basketball programs. Regardless of what anyone says (negative) about them. The young ladies still played inspired throughout the season.
