My students only get to check books out of the school media center once every eight days. I would love to stimulate their love of reading with a new book a few times a week.
Ninety percent of the students in my class (currently 30 students in a co-teach class) qualify for free lunch even with their parents working full time.
This means that there is very little money for students to be able to purchase books and not many are able to visit the public library.
My class loves to read and many students will read 3 or more books per day (when their classwork is finished of course). Many ask to borrow classroom library books to have something to read at home.
My Project
I am requesting some books to supplement books that I have already purchased. These books are on the independent reading level of most of the students in my class.
I am also requesting book pouches. These will enable the students to be able to take the books home and return them on a regular basis. I believe that this will give the students a way to keep track of the books.
I plan to check books out to students so that students can have books to read at home. I will rotate the books daily or as students return them so that students will always have something new to read.
I hope that my students will learn to love reading as much as I do. I hope my students will learn the value of daily reading at home, as well as, at school. I hope my students will make a positive connection between school and home when they read.
Donations to this project will make a difference in the lives of every one of my thirty students.
