Help me give my students opportunities to play games that will expand their critical thinking and logical reasoning skills. They will also have the opportunity to learn organizational skills by keeping our materials properly organized in containers/drawers.
I work with K-5 students with disabilities who range in abilities. My students are labeled with learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and significantly developmentally delayed. They are fabulous students who learn in unique ways. Each student has different strengths and weaknesses that are valued in the classroom.
The students at this school primarily come from low-income families and many students have experienced trauma already as elementary students.
However, they work hard to succeed regardless of their backgrounds. My students mean so much to me and I hold a special place in my heart for them!
My Project
Every now and again, elementary students need to "take a break" from their usual, rigorous daily curriculum. One way to take a break from their constant hard work is to play games that develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills. Kids enjoy playing games and do not realize they are learning while they are enjoying playing the games with their peers.
Over 75% of students at our school are considered "economically disadvantaged" and the school is among the top 20% of schools in Wisconsin with the highest percentage of students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch.
Students who come from economically disadvantaged homes are not as likely as students who come from economically stable homes to experience activities outside of the home such as going to a play or a museum.
These enrichment experiences lead to a greater appreciation of art and stronger critical thinking skills. If students are not exposed to enrichment experiences, they need to develop these critical thinking skills elsewhere so they are prepared for life outside of school. Taking a break from regular classroom work and playing games that develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills will allow students who do not typically get the opportunity to develop these skills at home to strengthen the skills at school.
The storage containers and drawers will be used to store activities and keep the classroom as organized as possible.
