Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are primarily from migrant families. Their parents work at a variety of farms within the community. They often travel north during the summer months to find work when off season. Our student population is primarily composed of students that come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The community was directly impacted by Hurricane Irma, and our students and families have suffered significant. Many of the families are without work or suffering economically due to lack of work this year.
Our students often enter kindergarten with low language skills.
Many of our students speak an indigenous language at home, as well as Spanish. These students are special because they have a strong desire to learn and overcome the obstacles that are present in their lives. Their parents often say that the reason they are here working is to provide their children with an education and better opportunities for their lives. Our students are respectful and kind to one another. Family values run deep. Parents are supportive and rarely miss important meetings for their children. Parent involvement is high and our staff, students, and families are one big family.
My Project
These materials will help complete our reading area in the classroom so that students have a soft and warm place to read and learn. The cart will help us organize our materials for groups. The plush swirl geometric area rug will help make our classroom warm and cozy. We will also use this area to work on speech sounds.
The 5 light floor lamp will add lighting and color to the reading area.
Finally, the lighting fixture with satin steel accents will create a warmth in our big reading area where students read fairy tales and play language games. My students will be so excited to read with these new resources.
