Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the school year, I want my students to find great joy in reading. One of the greatest challenges I have in getting them there is parental support. They need to practice reading at home, however, with many distractions, they lack motivation or drive to read at home.
I teach an ICT classroom full of 25 vibrant students.
They are a diversified population, with reading levels raging from Kindergarten to 4th grade. They are an expressive group, but with limited language proficiency, speaking their minds might be quite difficult. My school atmosphere has a positive vibe with much optimism in student growth. However, with limited resources available, adhering to the needs of every student in my classroom can be very difficult. These new books will help my children become excited and motivated to read!
My Project
My students love to listen to stories. They become hypnotized with the poetic language used in storybooks and the vibrant illustrations that bring the characters to life. When they are listening to stories, they always question the motives of the main character or are amazed with the accomplishments of historical figures in earlier time periods. However, when they ask me, "Ms. Mercado, may I borrow that book?"My heart crumbles because I know reading is quite laborious for them. My students need much practice reading a wide genre of books that will help their comprehension, fluency, decoding skills and their vocabulary. With these brand new books and articles, my students will be motivated to read and understand the material being presented to them. Not only will they be able to use the skills acquired from reading in English Language Arts, it will also improve their Mathematical thinking. These books will help my students in ways that will impact their life far beyond my classroom.
This project will greatly influence the lives of the underprivileged children I teach in my 3rd grade classroom.
With a wide population of my students living in poverty, foster care, group homes, and shelters, it is difficult for them to grasp the importance of an education. However, when my students are in my classroom, they are eager to learn especially when the materials are readily available. With your help, we will be able to open up our world to THEM.
Help my children learn, grow, and thrive!
