Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a family that consists of thirty-eight eager-to-learn kindergarten students in a Title I school in Houston, Texas where all of the students receive free lunch.
The majority of my students come from single-parent households where they struggle to make ends meet, but despite their difficulties, they always come into our classroom with smiles, eager to learn.
I want to provide my students with unique learning experiences in and out of our classroom that they can carry through life.
Many of my students and their families were affected by Hurricane Harvey and I am trying to make them feel welcomed and secure in my classroom. I also want them to feel like their world is going back to normal after such a tragic event.
My Project
The lap desks are going to provide my students the opportunity to work on the carpet and still have a desk with the materials that they might need for the math workstation.
My students all learn differently and therefore I want to be able to accommodate their learning needs.
I have students that love to work on the carpet, but they find it very difficult and uncomfortable to write on their journals on the floor unless they lay down on the carpet. The lap desk will eliminate this barrier.
The healthy snacks such as the cheese crackers, pop tarts, and fruit snacks will provide my students something to eat as they work on the daily math workstations. Our lunch is very early and my students often feel hungry as the day approaches. I want to be able to offer them a snack that they can eat when they feel hungry.
