Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our fourth grade consists of eight classrooms with approximately 22 students each. Many of these students come from low socioeconomic households approximately 10% of which are our Families in Transition students (FIT). These students may live either in multi-family homes or hotels. Due to our Title I status, 100% of our students receive free breakfast as well as lunch at no cost. Anywhere from 10-15% of our classes comprise of English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students. Approximately 1% are considered Non-English Speakers, but this number is increasing due to the hurricane-ravaged areas in Puerto Rico, resulting in several students joining our school family. A high percentage of our fourth grade also consists of students who have been retained at least once in their elementary career resulting in low expectations of themselves. A large number of our students also are in our MTSS program where we provide added assistance in academics as they have shown through testing that they have gaps in their learning.
Even with all of the obstacles our fourth grade has to overcome, our students love to learn and our teachers strive to meet all the learning styles of our students.
My Project
Language acquisition is always developing in young minds. With these items, my students will be able to access new vocabulary to help increase their everyday speaking skills along with their reading skills. The binders will hold all the new vocabulary they learn in a safe, sturdy, and convenient location. Their lingo will be available at their fingertips. Our school is comprised of low socio-economic families, several who have come from hurricane destroyed areas in Puerto Rico, who struggle with affording school supplies. Having the binders provided will be a huge burden lifted. These resources will help all my students learn new words as well as how to use them correctly.
