Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are first-time school learners who are extremely active, motivated, excited, and may I say, adorable. A majority of my students come to my class in August knowing little or no English.
A majority of my students are Latino with three students who were born in Bangladesh.
All of my students come from families whose income falls below the poverty line. Many of my children live with multiple families in small apartments where space is at a premium.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to have taught at my school since its inception. The school offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our pre K to 5th-grade students and often these are the only meals they eat in a day. The students in my class are eager to learn through motivating higher level activities. Unfortunately, I have only an hour of teacher assistant time twice a week for my active and needy four-year-olds and keeping everyone on task and learning can often be a challenge.
The more stimulating, hands-on manipulatives and centers I can rotate in my classroom, the more time I can devote to each student's individual needs.
My Project
When my 4 year old learners first come into my classroom many of them are scared and counting the minutes until they are reunited with their Mommy or family member.
The first thing I like to do to reduce little learner's anxiety is to provide a combination of exciting manipulatives such as the magnetic shape tiles in this project with learning opportunities that will be provided with this classroom set of magnetic letters.
The shape tiles will be used as an independent center where the children will be able to explore independently. The letters will be used in a small group setting. I know the children will be so thrilled to explore both of these learning tools. The letters will help me to assess which letters and sounds each child already knows in a non stressful fashion. The children will simply place a letter on a magnet board and if they are able to, they can identify the name and sound of the letter they placed on the board.
I would be very grateful to be able to provide these learning tools to my four year old students throughout the year.
