Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a huge interest in dolls and acting out experiences but the lack of resources and toys have made it difficult. You can make it possible for the students to participate.
I am a School Psychologist in a low-income NYC special needs school.
I work in a elementary and middle school. Around 99% of my students receive free or reduced lunch and come from low socioeconomic status. My students all have special needs. We work hard to give the students' skills to prepare them for being as independent as they can be. We have students with autism, cognitive delays, emotional difficulties and other genetic disorders.
My Project
Dramatic play help to build their social/emotional and play skills.
Dramatic play also increases the conversation going on. I would like to add some dolls to foster interaction and language. With the right toys, and some guidance from myself, I hope to build their language skills and social skills through play.
Young children learn best through play, and the social and dramatic play center is a great tool for integrating play across the curriculum.
Furthermore, the students will be talking about, reading about, and playing to better understand what makes up different kinds of families. Dramatic play expands a child's awareness of self in relation to others and the environment
I would love to add a dollhouse and more dolls to our dramatic play center to enhance their pretend play.
By adding multicultural dolls to our "family play," students will be able use dolls that represent both their own and other diverse family situations. My students will feel excitement, pride and a strong connection to their play when they are able to role-play family life that looks and acts familiar.
