Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom has 24 curious four-year-olds who love exploring and discovering new things every day. Our classroom consists of a variety of different social and economic backgrounds, mostly low-income, 98% to be exact. All my students are native Spanish speakers, of which the majority, if not all, will be the first ones in their families to attend college. In our classroom, we focus on learning language skills, improving social and emotional skills as well as learning ABC's, alliteration, and numbers to mention a few. For many of my students, coming to PK is their first time being away from home. The neighborhood where they live is a low-economic area and educational resources are hard to find. The majority of my students' parents have two jobs in order to support their families.
Our classroom is a fun and safe place where all my students are valued and respected.
My Project
It is important to teach our students to prepare for any possible situation they may find themselves in, from teaching simple tasks like memorizing their phone numbers to how to react when they see someone hurt.
It is crucial to teach our students to recognize and trust community helpers who are charged to serve and protect, like firefighters, doctors and nurses, and the police.
Having in our classrooms the "Community Helpers" kits can make it fun and meaningful for our students to learn that community helpers are people who work together to make the community a better place for everyone. It can also help them to learn the names of each community helper and how they use their specific skills to serve their city or town, increase their vocabulary and also prepare them with an understanding of how to interact with these community helpers in the event of an emergency.
