Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have worked at my school for 17 years and have had the pleasure of working with some really amazing students. One of the many admirable qualities of my students, which I have encountered year after year, is their dedication to their schooling. They have shown kindness and perseverance with their studies, while overcoming some amazing hardships. They love reading chapter books, participating in experiments, completing team building activities, and creating beautiful art pieces. My students are amazing, funny, hard-working, motivated, and sincere.
My Project
As a teacher I am given the job of teaching so many important and fundamental lessons in subjects as math and language arts. However the most important of all my teachings are about culture. I want to show my students the beauty and uniqueness about the Chinese culture and Chinese New Year. Everyday I want to share videos, music, read alouds and artifacts with my students to create a high interest and an inclusive curriculum that remains respectful for cultural differences.
Through understanding various cultures and social groups, students are able to make connections from their own lives to the lives to the lives of their peers.
Teaching diversity increases cultural competence, which in turn allows students to be empathetic to the experiences of others. In additional to its intrinsic value, teaching culture provides important social benefits. With improved learning and health, increased tolerance, and opportunities to come together with others, culture enhances our quality of life and increases over all well being for both individuals and communities.
