This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At least 75% of students in this school are considered economically disadvantaged. All students currently receive free breakfast and lunch. This school is unique in that it recognizes that our student population doesn't have access to a lot of opportunities that other children may have. Due to this, the school strives to bridge the gap by offering dance, karate, and drumline classes. Administration and staff are always looking into fundraising opportunities for field trips as well so that we can expose our students to experiences they may otherwise never get to have. Students may struggle but have a great desire to learn.
It's no secret that kids are obsessed with technology.
My students love computer time, even when they are doing something educational. Our school has Chromebooks, but we currently do not have enough to have my entire class get on at the same time and we also have to share them with two other classrooms, so scheduling them can be tricky. This is why I would love for my students to get tablets that can stay in the classroom full time.
My Project
A Kindle has endless possibilities! Like a laptop, it will allow my students to get on the internet, but it is more durable and portable than a laptop. With the included rubber case, it is virtually damage proof and has a 2 year no questions asked return guarantee! Most of my students have access to a tablet at home, so they will be familiar with it. The most important impact that these will have on the classroom is that they will get more of my students interested in reading. Kindles have a built in dictionary, so students can highlight an unfamiliar word with their finger and the definition will automatically pop up! This will help them increase their vocabulary and their reading comprehension. Most stories also have a text to speech feature which will help my struggling readers. These are also economical because I can download books from the local library for free onto the devices. Students will love these devices and they will get a lot of use. I think they can even be used to promote positive behavior so students can earn time on them!
Most of my students struggle with math as well as reading.
There are a lot of great apps that the students can use on the Kindle, as well as being able to access the websites that we use for math fact practice. I am very excited to share this technology with my class. The possibilities for including them in instruction and for activities are endless!
