Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nothing makes me happier than hearing my students say that statement.
It is what drives me as a teacher. My students come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but the common thread with all of them is that they have an interest and a passion for science.
Students in my chemistry classes are self-motivated and driven AP and pre-IB students, and they have a thirst for learning new information and for understanding and applying it as well. For my pre-IB students, this is their first exposure to chemistry, and I want to foster, encourage, and support an interest in the topic. My AP chemistry students are students who have taken chemistry previously and have decided that it is a subject they want to continue to pursue and investigate further.
My Project
With limited school budgets it can be very difficult to make it through the year with the supplies that we need in our classroom. Unfortunately, paper, hand sanitizer, and Kleenex are all things that the students value and are thankful they have access to in my class, but I have run out of all of those and can not provide my students the work environment I want without them.
My students deserve to have a place to learn chemistry where they can be healthy, and have access to things that can help them stay that way.
I work very hard to make sure that I conserve paper as much as possible, fit as many things on a page and keep the pages of an assignment to the absolute minimum, but because we are not a 1:1 device school, paper and pencil is still a huge component of the education in a classroom, and all students need to have access to those materials.
I really need these items for my class so that I can focus on teaching the students chemistry, and not worrying about if I will have paper to make copies on, or if the students who are not feeling well have Kleenex, or if the students have access to hand sanitize to help them stay healthy. Helping the students and providing them a safe, clean, healthy environment matters so much to me.
