Our urban school is a California Distinguished School, a Title I High Achieving School and 2009 and 2011 "Schools To Watch". It has a diverse student body of approximately 930 students enrolled in K – 8th grade. My middle school students choose band or orchestra as an elective class and are very enthusiastic as they enter my classroom each day.
My students love being in music!
They work hard, collaborate well with their peers and genuinely enjoy the process of learning about music and how to play an instrument.
My Project
It is very encouraging for me as a music teacher to see the bands and orchestras at our school growing each year. Unfortunately, the students outnumber the number of instruments the school owns. With your help, my students will be afforded the opportunity to learn how to play the violin and the clarinet. They will play on them each day during class and hopefully practice on them at home every night. They will perform on them for our school concerts and be used by orchestra and band students for years to come. A leading music education friend of mine once wrote:
“Learning to play a musical instrument and acquiring the unique habits of mind that come with it is one of the most incredible opportunities that our school can offer your child.
The instrument that will be placed in your child's hands has the power to transform their lives in ways that no other endeavor can.” I can’t say it any better, and I couldn’t agree more.
