Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8 hour day typically consists of teaching 80 middle schoolers who dislike to read....and I am their Reading teacher! My goal for my students is to become better readers and gain a lifelong love for books. The items in this project will assist me in accomplishing this goal.
My students attend a rural middle school with a high percentage of free/reduced lunch.
Many of our students live with one parent or grandparent. We have a high number of Limited English Proficient students as well as Exceptional Children. Despite many obstacles, my students are loving, caring and eager to learn. Through the items in this project (fiction and nonfiction novels, audiobooks, a new paper cutter for the numerous hands-on reading projects we incorporate and 2 stylish door stops to keep our doors from slamming shut while we're busy reading), I will be able to continue exposing my students to the exciting world of reading. I will be able to spark their interest in several genres and show them that reading is an adventure. Reading can take them away from their current circumstance and give them a positive, "non-technology" distraction, not to mention improve their reading skills for life.
My Project
My plan for the requested materials is to complete a reading unit based on "Serafina and the Black Cloak." I would like to read two fiction novels and couple it with a non-fiction book about Biltmore House, a nearby attraction.
We are currently reading the first novel in the Miss Peregrine series. They love it so I have requested the audiobook for the second book, "Hollow City" as well as 2 copies of the first book for 2 new students.
Since we often incorporate art in our reading class I would like to replace our well-used paper cutter with a new one (listed as wood trimmer on the list of requested items). The remainder of my proposal is for 2 "James the Doorman" doorstops to be used as a creative way to invite students into the world of reading....in other words to assist in keeping an otherwise closed door open. By providing a welcoming space where my students are surrounded by books they learn to love, I greatly improve their chances of being successful in high school and beyond.
My project will impact students by providing them with several printed and audiobooks of different genres to assist in improving their reading skills.
My classroom will continue to be a place where struggling readers find repeated success through engaging novels, inviting environment and by incorporating art, which most students love. As a middle school reading teacher, I love to see my students get excited day after day over books. This project will allow me to continue sharing the love.
