One of the things I love the most about my students is their curiosity about new things and experiences. Many of my students come from backgrounds where prior experiences in the arts are rare. When my students see a “real” instrument or experience a live concert, the looks of wonder and astonishment on their faces is priceless.
One example of that wonder and astonishment occurred after my 4th grade students attended a free concert featuring the music of Bach.
In one of the thank you notes to the musicians, a student remarked, “The music sounded so real." Students today are exposed to so much that is manufactured and processed. The privilege to present something real to students and to see them respond is one of the most gratifying parts of my job.
My Project
My music classes were very fortunate to be blessed with 30 new ukuleles for our classroom through donors choose.org. I would like our students to assist in keeping them in tune and ready to play, but their young ears and fingers aren’t always reliable and need a little help. Tuning a string instrument requires fine motor control that many elementary students to have yet to develop. Tuning the instruments by myself will take away from instructional time.
These Snark SN6X clip on tuners will help students to tune our instruments quickly so we can spend more time playing and making
