My students need 21 new and engaging nonfiction titles in the library that will appeal to their interests and provide information on a variety of topics.
Our Middle School students are noticeably absent from the library as their schedules demand more and more of their time for their studies and extracurricular activities. I would like to reignite their excitement for reading by providing them with some award winning nonfiction titles.
My students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders who attend a Middle School in Vermont.
They are energetic, bright, and eager learners. They enjoy reading and love to keep current with the latest books or series being written for their age group. These students have a natural curiosity about the world in which they live. Providing them with some award winning nonfiction titles will reignite their passion for reading, a passion that was very evident to me when I had these same students in my Reading class in 6th grade. My goal is to remind these students that it is important to continue to read as they grow older and to make reading a part of their daily routine!
My Project
I have chosen 21 award winning nonfiction titles for my students. Organizations such as the American Library Association and the Young Adult Library Services Association have recommended these titles on their websites. The National Core Curriculum Standards have been adopted by our state and provide a clear understanding of what students are supposed to learn to prepare them for college and a career. Standards in Reading and Literature state that by the time students reach the 8th grade, more than half of what they read should be informational text. I have chosen many informational titles on a wide range of topics. I even selected a series of nonfiction graphic novels on science topics that I think will be very appealing. My students will have a very nice selection of new and current information books to choose from and in turn these titles will greatly enhance the library collection!
I believe the purchase of these titles will intrigue the interests of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students that I serve and will result in increased circulation of informational books in the library.
These students will expand their knowledge beyond what they are learning in the classroom in their core subjects such as history, science and social studies! The first students to borrow these books will set an example for their peers that reading is learning and can be enjoyable!
