This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a public high school teacher serving students in grades 9-12 in Little Rock, AR. The percentage of students in my school who qualify for free or reduced lunch is approximately 55%. The students for whom I am requesting these materials are enrolled in Advanced Placement 3D Design.
They are brilliant, high level art students in one of the most advanced courses we offer.
The curriculum is designed to give the students as much creative liberty as possible in the design and execution of their sculptures, which means we need a wide variety of materials in order to accommodate their individual artistic visions. Due to budget constraints at school and the students’ lack of discretionary income, funding the material needs of this class is quite challenging.
My Project
The purpose of this project is to provide my AP 3D Design students the opportunity to create installation art on campus. We will study the work of installation artists such as Sandy Skoglund, Pepon Osorio, Judy Chicago, Christo and Jean-Claude, and others. We will analyze and interpret the work of these artists as well as the unique artistic functions of installation art in general. We will consider the immersive effect that interacting with installations can have on the viewer.
The students will work in collaborative groups to design and create immersive art installations on campus that viewers can actually enter and interact with, rather than simply observe.
We will hold an exhibition during which students and faculty will be invited to interact with our installations. This will be the capstone project of the ‘Breadth’ section of the students’ portfolios before they begin their independent investigations, or ‘Concentrations.’
This will be an ambitious undertaking due to the materials we will require. A wide variety of construction tools and materials will be needed. These will include an overhead projector for transferring images into the installations; molding and casting kits to create plaster appendages the installations; linoleum and a pin press for synthesizing printing into the installations; spray paint for the final surface treatments; paper for interior lining and photography; and drills, gap filler, tape, and related construction materials for building the assemblage structures. Without financial help, we simply will not be able to have this educational experience.
