Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Newcomers make special population because they add to the greatness of our diversity in this country! New immigrants and refugees conform 100% of our student population at our newcomer center. they come from various countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan, Congo, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Vietan and Eritrea. Most of our student speak at least two languages. They come to us with very unique needs. These needs very from experiencing trauma-related issues to having little or no formal education. It is a pleasure serving these students but it is also a challenge! They deserve opportunities to equal, high quality education, services to help them learn coping skills, and most importantly, they need caring, loving, and prepared ESOL teachers.

The need for acquisition of literacy skills in English or in their native tongue is the most vital need among our students.

It is imperative that we get the necessary materials I need to teach them the 4 language domains: reading, writing listening and speaking skills. These children who many have experience violence of some form, who come from war-torn countries need our support. Your contribution can have an immeasurable impact on their literacy skills and knowledge of the American culture.

My Project

Most of our students come with very limited English and some with no formal schooling in their native language. Others have had informal education in refugee camps!

Let's give these children the opportunity to explore the American culture and the culture of many of them through educational literature!

My students will engage with these readers during our workshop- reading and writing- sessions . Some will read independently and others with me during Guided Reading or Read Alouds. They will also take these readers home so that the reading practice extends to the comfort of their home.

These fine adolescents will become literate in English and will enhance their reading skills in their own language in no time at all! Our children are the future of these country; they are so worth your investment!
