My students need to see how plants and food grow. This Aero Garden set up is perfect for a Kindergarten classroom to show 5 year olds how water, light & dirt make things grow!
I teach in a small, rural school with the student population less than 450 for all of K-12. We have a very high percentage of families who qualify for free and reduced price lunch which also qualifies us school wide for Title I. With a $200 annual classroom budget, I am able to buy things such as construction paper, writing paper, tape, paint, markers and such. I then rely on writing grants to keep my classroom materials fun and engaging.
My students are 5 and 6 year olds that absolutely love school and I feel it is my job to make sure that excitement continues to grow throughout their Kindergarten year.
When I am told by parents that their child is sad that they have to miss a day of school, I secretly grin from ear to ear. I want my students to beg for more time at school and I plan to continue finding new ways to do my best to make that happen.
My Project
The AeroGrow Miracle Garden will allow my students to have the ownership and responsibilities of growing a small maintainable garden. During different times of the year we will be able to grow tomatoes, herbs, plants and flowers. We have all of the information in text books and picture books but students need to see first hand that these things really do grow from light, water, dirt and seeds. This is the perfect solution for a MN classroom that is not set up for an outside garden due to summer months and summer break for students. The size is also very doable for a classroom setting which will allow our science to come alive.
