Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Open your books and turn to page 204." Really?? Is this 1945? We are living in a time of computers, video games, cell phones, and apps. Turning to page 204 simply won't cut it anymore. My students are desperate for knowledge but are lacking hands-on experience.
Against all odds, my students are kind, caring, loving, initiative, motivated students.
In the face of so much adversity, they come to school hungry for knowledge.
I teach at a Title 1 school with a majority of English Language Learners. Many of their families struggle to provide basic school supplies, let alone money for Science field trips. They become excited by the simplest of things and deserve to be given the opportunity to keep up with differing socio-economic peers.
My students are not your typical students. We are not your typical classroom. The transformation that has taken place is phenomenal and beyond what one would expect. They have grown extremely independent. They have become self learners who take initiative and chances.
My Project
I currently teach reading and math using a workshop model. I teach small groups of students while the others work independently using classroom resources. This has proved very effective. I would like to use the same model when teaching Science so that my independent workers can have the freedom to grow while those who need more support can work with me in a small group.
Students would use these games and puzzles to build understanding of complex concepts. They would use these games and puzzles during a Science rotation as well as for morning work and review.
I can already imagine them sitting in small groups or in partners investigating simple machines, animal adaptations, and matter!
Children take pride in knowing that others support them and believe in them enough to provide for their education.
Not only will students benefit from amazing resources, they will benefit from knowing others see their potential. Watch out world! The more confident these students become, the more powerful! Before you know it, they will forget to hesitate or shy away from telling you their dreams. Before you know it, they will see their dreams as a reality. Doctors, Scientists, Researchers!
