Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners, primarily from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, who live in an inner-city neighborhood.
I watch my students struggle valiantly on a daily basis to overcome myriad obstacles to their success.
The color of their skin, the economic situation of their families, their home lives, their cultural heritage, and their language speaking abilities are all factors that complicate their educational process. Working with them to achieve success is what motivates me to come to work every day. Now with all the complications of online learning for younger children, the obstacles to overcome have become even greater.
My Project
With every passing day, it seems more and more likely that class instruction will continue to be remote for most of the remaining school year. Adjustments that teachers, students, and families may initially have viewed as temporary measures are now becoming the norm. It is imperative that students have the conditions necessary for learning in their homes.
I am shocked at how often a student is trying their best to participate in class while in a loud and distracting home environment.
This challenge is amplified for my students, who are all English language learners who require more supports to achieve successful communication. I believe that these students' ability to focus and participate in instruction will be greatly improved if they have headphones that will help block out distracting noises in their home environment.
