I often tell people that my students arrive to school hungry: hungry for love, hungry for food and hungry for an education. Many overcome numerous problems at home that most adults never have to face.
However, despite these circumstances, they still arrive each day with bright, eager faces, ready to learn.
Like almost all children, when they can become engaged in learning through the use of games and play, success follows at a higher rate. The following is my favorite teaching quote: "I call my students "my kids" because in our year together they aren't just kids on my class roster, they become a part of my heart." I will do everything possible to help "my kids." Unfortunately, I will never be able to solve all of their problems. However, for 8 hours each school day I have the opportunity to make them feel important and successful, but most of all, loved!
My Project
My students love being physically active at recess. Our P.E. teacher recently built a Gaga Pit for them to use on the playground, but we do not have good soccer balls to use inside of it. Our community has recently added a traveling soccer team for our elementary students. Having soccer balls would give them more time to practice during recess with others. The community also created a jr. basketball league. The students have worked hard all winter on developing basketball skills. The school will be installing new basketball hoops this spring on our outside courts. Unfortunately, we do not have nice basketballs. Again, having basketballs would give our students a chance to work on basketball skills with others. Not only would these balls be used by students in my room, we would share them with the entire WPE, approximately 400 students!
