This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in a community in Florida. We are a Title I school with nearly 80% of our enrollment qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. Our students primarily come from low-income families who struggle to provide fresh healthy meals to their children.
While the school provides breakfast for all, and all meals follow federal nutrition guidelines, the students do not know how to make the best choices for healthy meals.
With the soaring statistics about childhood obesity, now is the time to educate the children on how to eat right.
My Project
We have a garden space where students and teachers can come to learn about growing healthy food. Students at our school have limited access to fresh produce outside of the school cafeteria and usually don't eat the vegetables at lunch. In our sub-tropic community we have a long growing season and can easily have backyard or container gardens. By exposing children to the ease of growing fresh vegetables, they hopefully will transfer the knowledge to their families.
We are in need of tools and materials to enhance their garden experience.
By having a set of child-friendly garden tools, a soil tester, butterfly cage, and other items, we can immerse them in the garden activities and ignite their imaginations.
