Our school is located in a remote area of Alaska that is full of rolling hills, rivers, and lakes, and an abundance of wildlife from birds, moose, caribou, bears, and more. The many families of our students live on the abundance of wildlife for their survival. Our town of Tok is the first settlement that travelers reach when traveling the Alcan Highway after leaving Canada.
My students live in a small community with about 1000 people living year-round within the immediate area.
We experience some of the coldest weather in the state. Students love to be outside in the snow, sledding, mushing dogs, or just going for walks. Students have a lot of time to spend indoors as well as reading and playing games with family and friends. Families teach their children how to safely enjoy the outdoors all year long. So many students love to read on the cold, winter nights.
My Project
My students have already learned how to grow plants using soil, seeds and cups. I would like to take my students in a new direction. We would like to learn how to grow plants using only water and light.
My students need Hydroponics Growing Systems to help them learn how plants can grow without soil.
Being that we live in Alaska and spend the majority of our time indoors, being able to grow plants year round will be a great life long skill to have. We have very limited resources to seeds and soil. A hydroponics system will demonstrate to students a new way to grow plants.
