My students need supplies, such as tools, seeds, and a camera, to grow and cultivate a garden to assist in cross-curricular studies of literature, math, and science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. However, if you teach him to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." My students would love to learn some basic, but inherent, steps to self-reliance. This knowledge will benefit the students, our school, and the community for years to come.
I teach a wonderful and diverse group of 5th grade children in California.
Our class consists of gifted and talented students, as well as English Language Learners, and special education students. All enjoy school and are enthusiastic about learning. We live in a suburban community where most households require a dual income just to make ends meet. Our parents are appreciative for their children's education and see our school as a true asset to the community.
Our school is relatively new, but we do not qualify for any extra funding from our district and each year we are met with more cuts to our basic programs.
The students readily accept challenges and love learning opportunities. They are excited at the prospect of researching gardening, designing and cultivating a garden on campus, and sharing this opportunity with the community of students, teachers, and families.
My Project
My students would love the opportunity to learn how to create something that can help sustain self-reliance while benefiting the environment simultaneously. This project will do just that! The students plan to embrace a project of establishing and cultivating a garden on the school campus as a means to bridge together a study of literature, math, and science.
The students will design the garden and work together to develop and care for it. They also plan to share its vegetation with the community. The students' project will require tools specific to gardening and planting, planting trays, and seeds. Also, the students would appreciate a digital camera and memory cards to document their project and progress. We plan to share the experience with the community on our website.
My students' lives will be changed for the better as they not only learn how to take steps toward self-reliance, but they will also see how gardening benefits others too. Remember: we will "teach them to fish"!
Your donations to this learning opportunity will allow my students a unique experience that will benefit them for years to come.
All of my students have only "experienced" a garden through literature or other media. This project will help my students learn through hands-on experience and will help them think more globally about their environment and community. Your contributions will make this difference in their lives. Thank you for your consideration.
