My students need items to assist them in working in their new school garden! We are requesting shovels, a hose, and a wheel barrow along with some garden display kits.
I teach middle school gifted students. Each year, they set personal goals that help them reach the goals of the Gifted curriculum. This year, students have shown a tremendous interest in getting items grown by their own hands onto their school lunch plate!
We are a tiny district in rural Missouri serving less than 400 students.
A small percentage qualify for our Gifted program. The program provides an opportunity for growth and hands-on learning beyond the regular education classroom curriculum.
This year's students are seeking to create a farm to table program that will last for years to come in our district and help students become smarter, together. They are highly motivated and seek an opportunity to educate their fellow students and provide possible options outside of our normally provided lunch options.
My Project
The resources we are requesting will assist with the nitty-gritty of our program. We've chosen a plot and cleared it with the assistance of borrowed materials. We believe that if we have our own supplies and materials, we will be more successful at being seen as a permanent program in our district. The students want to leave supplies that will excite and motivate future students to continue their work. We are requesting a wheel barrow, hose, and shovels. These are the essential supplies we need to continue planting and tending to our garden. Other requested resources such as the hydroponics kit and Root-Vue allows us to grow items and view the roots system. These items will not only make our students more educated gardeners, they can also use these resources to educate other students in our school.
Starting an educational program for our district about the benefits of farm to table eating experiences has immense value.
These students are not only seeking to learn more about agricultural practices, but to share what they learn with their entire community. We hope that the impact will eventually reach all in our district and influence decisions students make concerning food and their health.
